Halloween Contact Lenses -- Great For Halloween And Costume Parties

Jeepers Creepers Contact LensesHalloween contact lenses could be perfect for bringing the character in your costume to life! There are various decorative contact lenses in a variety of styles. From the simple ones - that will convert you into a red eyed alien, or a green eyed reptile – to the more elaborate ones with zebra stripes or flowers, they are a great way to enhance your Halloween ensemble.

Buying Halloween Contact Lenses

Halloween contact lenses are available from a variety of sources, including online sources. However, you should know of certain things before you buy a pair.

Nearly everyone can wear special effect contact lenses. If your vision is normal, you can go for plain lenses with no corrective power. Corrective contact lenses for special effects are also available, including toric contact lenses for those suffering from astigmatism. Even if you are going for plain costume contact lenses, it is always advisable to consult your optometrist. When ordering these special effect lenses, always ensure you have your prescription ready, especially when buying from online sources. Halloween contact lenses, like ordinary every day use contact lenses need to be ‘fitted,’ hence the prescription. Decorative lenses, if improperly made, can cause eye injury, which could eventually become permanent. These costume contact lenses are not dangerous, as long as you buy them from reputable contact lens manufacturers, or from well-known and trusted online sources. However, they must not be swapped with other people, as there is a danger of picking up an infection. They need to be cleaned properly, just as you would your normal contact lenses.

Even though costume contact lenses are totally opaque, your visibility is unhampered because of the center of the lens - which is clear. The exception is in the case of white lenses for blind eye effect – which are totally opaque. Anyway, these are worn one at a time only.

However, you may notice that your peripheral vision is slightly affected when wearing these decorative contact lenses. Though Halloween contact lenses are as good as daily use contacts, it is advisable not to use them continuously for more than 8 hours.

Caring For Your Halloween Contact Lenses

Halloween contact lenses are like ordinary contact lenses that everyone uses. You need to remember one thing, though. You may be wearing such costume contact lenses for fun, and for a short time, but these are medical devices, and need to be cared for as such.

Caring for them is quite simple. A no-rub multipurpose solution, a pair of plastic tweezers, and a contact lens case, which are all available from any chemist shop, is all you need. There are no other ‘special’ solutions required, only make sure your multipurpose solution is labeled – ‘for soft contact lenses.’ If you have more than one costume contact lenses, arrange to have a separate case for each.

This is what you should do to care for your costume contact lenses:

  • Before handling your contact lenses, always wash your hands with soap.
  • Pick up your lens gently with tweezers, taking care not to tear it.
  • Place it on your fingertip and rinse it with a no-rub multipurpose contact lens solution.
  • Insert it in your eye.
  • Repeat the same for the lens of the other eye.
  • After use, take them out of your eyes, give them another rinse with the no-rub solution, and place them in the case with the fresh solution.

As is normal, you would be using your decorative contact lenses, once in a while, on special occasions. As there may be a gap of several weeks in between uses, it is advisable that you rinse the lenses, and change the solution, once a week. If you forget to do so, and your lenses have remained unattended in their cases, give them a double rinse, and soak them in a fresh solution for about a couple of hours, before wearing them.

In case you do not use corrective lenses or color contact lenses on a daily basis, the usage of costume contact lenses may cause a slight discomfort in the beginning. Do not rub your eyes, and instead use lubricant drops that are easily available from the corner chemist shops. To get used to the feeling, you can start by wearing them a couple of hours a day, every day, from a few days before the day of the party.

The Variety In Costume Contacts

There are endless varieties of decorative contact lenses available for all occasions, including Halloween. You can browse the Internet to pick up the ones that go with your costume. Some of the high quality, affordable Halloween contact lenses that are popular, and create great effects are:

  • Alien
  • Blackout and whiteout
  • Hypnotica
  • Cat eye
  • Ice fire
  • Red hot
  • Black, red and white spiral
  • Wolf

These are mass produced costume contact lenses. You can also have your contact lenses custom made, which are hand painted, and may be more expensive. Then there are the Scleral costume contact lenses, which are quite more expensive than the other costume contacts. These lenses, not only cover the pupil and the iris of the eyes, as other costume lenses, but the whole sclera – the visible area of the eyes.

Sclera Halloween contact lenses provide an absolutely magnificent effect and are quite comfortable to wear. These unique custom made contact lenses require a special prescription, as the optometrist has to measure your eye.

Make your choice of the Halloween contact lenses and have a great time at the party!

The Perfect Scary Halloween Mask

Searching for a scary Halloween mask? This Halloween makeup idea is not for the faint-hearted! This gruesome brew is for those who love the horror of HELL-oween. If you are nifty enough, Granny’s goodies could turn you into this!

The base of this Halloween makeup design is plain gelatin and strawberry jam. Remember, although this recipe sounds ghoulishly delicious, it’s not to be eaten! Follow directions on the gelatin box, adding the proper ratio of boiling water to plain gelatin. To this, add about 1/3 ratio of glycerine to your mixture. (Glycerine is available in most pharmacies.) The glycerine will prevent the gelatin from cracking and give you ghoulish lasting power. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil and simmer for five minutes. When it starts to cool, skim off the milky froth that floats to the top. Clear gelatin is all that should remain.

Pour part of the gelatin mixture into a cup that you will work from. You can reheat the remaining mixture on the stove or just microwave the cup you are working with, as the mixture will cool and become difficult to work with.

Take your artist’s spatula and put a small amount of gelatin on the back of your wrist to test the temperature. The mixture should be warm and fluid, but not uncomfortably hot to the skin. Now apply the gelatin to the face as if you were icing a cake.

Purposely do some sections of your subject’s face thicker than others to develop different textures and levels. The gelatin will want to drip sometimes, so catch these drips with the tip of your spatula and change their direction so they don’t set. Do one layer, let it dry and proceed with the next layer. As each layer gets tacky, use the tip of the spatula to create nooks and crevices. After 3 to 5 layers have been completed, you can create small holes to look like open, rotting wounds! (For those of you that are completely grossed by this Halloween mask, stick to lip gloss!)

Take the tip of your artist’s spatula and carefully dig a little hole through the layers until you arrive at the skin. You must be careful not to scratch the skin for obvious reasons – it hurts. A pair of cuticle scissors will help snip away small parts of gelatin to create large craters. Now fill the small holes and craters with strawberry jam (no tasting) and let the jam bleed slightly out of the wound…..Yum!

Ghouls in training may take this scary Halloween mask a step further by darkening the eyes with red, purple and black eye shadows. A grey and blue eye pencil will give a gorgeously ghastly color to the mouth. And remember, no nibbling on the jam, just on your victims.

Be A Halloween Superstar - Make Your Own Halloween Costume

At last it's that time of year when for one night, at least, we can all pretend to be something or somebody else. We can simply put on a halloween costume, add a few accessories and get into the part. But for even more fun, why not take complete control over who you want to be and make your own halloween costume. With a little bit of extra effort you can easily be the star of any halloween party or trick-or-treating expedition.

If you're going to make your own halloween costume you'd better get started. The sooner you get going the better. Leaving yourself plenty of time means you can relax and have fun collecting the bits and pieces you need to make your own halloween costume. So, where do you start?

Well, before you can make your own halloween costume you need to decide who or what you want to be. You could be a famous hero or an icon - think about your favorite TV programs and movies. Who do you admire from history? Which musicians appeal to you?
Or you could go for the more traditional halloween costumes - ghosts, witches, pumpkins, ghouls and monsters.

Once you've decided on who or what you want to be it's time to search for items that can be used to create your own halloween costume.

The easiest place to start is at home. Look around from room to room and see what things you can find that might fit in with the halloween character you've chosen. There are the obvious items like wedding and bridesmaids dresses, prom gowns or formal suits that make outfits such as halloween fairies or angels. But don't be too fussy at first, just grab anything that catches your eye - unwanted clothing, shoes, gloves, pieces of fabric, garbage bags, boxes, ties, socks, old towels, sheets etc. etc. The possibilities are endless.

By spending a little extra time you should be able to come up with something a little more exciting than the hobgoblin outfits that all your neighbors will be wearing.
Maybe you could dig through the closets of your older relatives looking for clothing that has gone out of style. An old double-breasted pin stripe wold be a great basis from which to make your own 30s gangster halloween costume.

Vintage clothing can be used for 60s hippies, 50s beatniks or 40s film stars. And if you don't have and relatives with cluttered closets who can help you make your own halloween costume you can always try your local thrift shop or second-hand store.

There's probably a Goodwill outlet near you where you can pick your way through the rails and check out all the clothing for more halloween costume ideas. Maybe some old shoes or a purse will inspire. Perhaps an odd piece of fabric or a belt will get your creative juices flowing.

Don't worry if you can't find exactly what you're looking for. If you're feeling a bit stuck just start with anything that appeals to you and you'll get more ideas as you go along. Remember, a halloween costume only needs to represent the character you want to portray. It doesn't have to be an exact match. You're not looking for perfection when you're making your own halloween costume.

Don't forget to look for your halloween accessories as well - toy gun for a gangster, beads for hippy, wigs, contact lenses, hair dye, make up etc.

Once you have a number of choices start trying things on and and see how you can use the items to make your own unique halloween costume. Better still, get a friend to help so you can swap ideas. Then once, you're ready for the big night, there's only one thing left to do - get someone to take a photo so you back with pride on the year you decided to make your own halloween costume.

5 Easy 'No-Sew' Halloween Costume Ideas

Everyone wants a great Halloween costume but if you want to create your own instead of going with those common store-bought varieties, we have some suggestions for you. If you would like to design a costume for Halloween but prefer to keep it simple with no sewing involved, here are some great easy ideas.

One of the oldest and simplest ideas around is the ghost costume. All you need is an old white sheet and a pair of scissors. Cut out slots for the eyes so you can see where you are going and you’ve got it made.

Dressing like T.V. characters is always a lot of fun. Take Pippi Longstocking, for example. All you need are some knee high colorful socks, hair in pigtails and use an eyebrow pencil for freckles (if you don’t have them naturally). Add a simple shirt and a pair of jeans with the legs rolled up and your costume is complete.

If you want to be a little more eye-catching, how about being Cinderella for a night? Pick out one of your prettiest dresses, fix up your hair and apply just the right amount of makeup. Add a pair of fancy ballroom shoes and some sparkly jewelry and you are ready for a Halloween you will not forget for a long time. Just make sure you are ready to run when the clock strikes twelve.

Another famous Halloween costume is Abraham Lincoln. You need a dark suit and a white shirt with tie, along with a top hat and a fake beard. What a simple but distinguish costume that does not require much effort at all!

If you prefer something a little more dramatic, then use some old clothes and cut holes and make rips in the shirt and pants. Buy some Halloween makeup along with some fake blood to make your costume more realistic. Put all this together and you have the perfect zombie costume.

Remember if all else fails, you can always purchase one of the many Halloween face masks that are made available today. Add them to an outfit that matches the theme of the mask and they make great Halloween costumes. Dressing up for Halloween can be simple and a lot of fun when you let your imagination take over for a night.

2 Inexpensive Halloween Costume Ideas

Did you know that you can make your own Halloween costumes without spending lots of money? You many already have many of the supplies needed to put these together. Here are 2 neat Halloween costumes that you can make yourself:

Skeleton

All you need to make a skeleton costume is a black sweat suit or a black turtle neck and pants, a piece of chalk, white fabric paint (preferably glow-in-the dark, or uv reactive), and an image of a skeleton. Find a graphic; something used to create simple children's halloween crafts, or black and white clip art will work well.

Lay out the sweat suit, with the skeleton image along side it, for reference. Use the chalk to draw a simple skeleton on the front, back, legs and arms of the suit. If you want to change something, you can wash the chalk out later. Fill in your chalk lines with the fabric paint, allow it to dry, thoroughly. Wash the suit to remove the chalk, and you're ready to go!

Mummy

The mummy costume is the easiest to make! Buy some cheap, gauzy, fabric in white or cream. Cut the fabric into long, thick strips. If you plan to be the mummy, have someone to help you wrap the fabric. Start with the arms, legs, and then wrap the body. Use safety pins to secure it. You can even wrap the head, but remember that things may get hot, as it will be difficult for heat to escape from the head.

Make the Costume look old, as if it's just been exhumed from an ancient tomb, by lightly rubbing dirt into it.
